Mary McAvoy a native of Drumgath County Down Northern Ireland settled in Australia 20 years ago and more recently with her husband David they purchased boutique winery Tallagandra Hills near Canberra. Mary is a cousin of Milestone owner Tom McAvoy and it is fitting that Mary chose Milestone as their sole outlet for their wines in Ireland.
The Favourite sonis made using tempranillo grapes which are proving to be ideally suited to the climate of Gundaroo in the Canberra region. With its origins in Spain, this flamboyant variety produces rich, black grapes, leading to a wine of savoury character with rounded rich dark fruit flavours. It requires special attention in the vineyard with a longer ripening period than other varieties, leading to its status as The Favourite Son. Our Tempranillo is feisty yet balanced, just like our two favourite sons, Ben and Sam.
